As per the report, it is found that Amazon warehouse and delivery employees have now gone on strike in Italy for rising concern around working conditions.
Well, this 24-hour strike takes place at several parts of Amazon warehouse in Italy that involves Tuscany, Florence, and Pisa. However, the Trade unions FILT-CGIL, FIT-CISL, and Uiltrasporti mentioned that its first national strike affects Amazon’s entire logistics operations conducted in Italy.
Notably, this strike took the nature of tensions that have grown between Amazon and its frontline workforce in Europe and the U.S. amid the coronavirus pandemic. Currently, workers in Italy and other parts of Europe went under a strike in the last year to call on Amazon for implementing a greater coronavirus pandemic. The Warehouse workers in Italy and other parts of Europe now went on strike last year to call on Amazon for the implementation of greater coronavirus safety measures. Now, the workers across the U.S. have also participated in walkouts and raised protests last year to highlight similar concerns.
Notably, the warehouse workers at Amazon’s Bessemer, Alabama, facility, known as BHM1 are now voting on whether for joining the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union. Right now, the Unions have become a stronger foothold among some of Amazon’s European workforce. However, somehow Amazon has managed to head off organizing efforts in the U.S.
FIT-CISL, FILT-CGIL, and Uiltrasporti who called the strike after they said negotiations broke down Assoespressi as an employer association representing last-mile and e-commerce couriers that involves some of the Amazon’s third-party delivery firm in Italy.
Workers and the unions are now calling on Amazon and Assoespressi to make changes to workloads, shifts, and benefits. Now they’re also calling for access to “Covid allowance for operations in constant pandemic conditions.”
Communication director for Amazon’s Europe, Middle East Africa operations, Stuart Jackson informed the news channel CNBC that “The fact is, Amazon and our Italian network of independent delivery service providers already offer what these groups are asking for — excellent pay, excellent benefits and excellent opportunities for career growth, all while working in a safe, modern work environment. The unions know this.”
Well, the representatives from FILT-CGIL, FIT-CISL, and Uiltrasporti didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
