Amazon’s New Boss Faces Pressure From All Sides As Bezos Leaves For Space

Andy Jassy is the longest-serving executive since former CEO Jeff Bezos, who has worked for Amazon Web Services since its establishment 18 years ago. He is widely seen as driving the growth of the company’s lucrative cloud platform. Ever since Amazon was founded, Jassy has been Amazon’s Chief Executive Officer, taking the larger role of CEO of the company today.

Bezos is the world’s richest man, making him a target for politicians and advocates seeking revenue cuts and inequality, for example, who see him as an out-of-control energy company. Bezos, the world’s richest man, handed over his CEO title this summer to Jassy, who had previously headed Amazon’s cloud computing division, and handed over the role effective July. Entrepreneur reports that Jassy has expanded the team, which provides more than 90 cloud infrastructure applications and services used by millions of startups, businesses and government customers around the world.

Bezos was a daily visitor to the Oscars, and he increased his presence in the nation’s capital by buying The Washington Post, but by other means. Taking his words at face value, Bezos seems ready to step away from the daily pressures of running a company of this magnitude. He wants to spend more time pursuing other passions that give him meaning and satisfaction.

In a blog post earlier this year for his employees, Bezos said he plans to spend more time on side projects such as his Space company Blue Origin, his philanthropic initiatives, overseeing The Washington Post and his own. In the post, he said that as exec chairman, he “will remain involved in important Amazon initiatives, but the time and energy I need from day one will be funded by what I can do here on Earth, be it Blue Origin or The Post or my other passions. After three decades, Bezos is preparing to channel his energy into other activities. The richest man in the world, Forbes estimates, will fulfill his childhood dream of travelling to space. He flew on July 20 with his space company Blue Origin into space and made it aboard the first flight with a crew that included his younger brother, Mark, an investor and volunteer firefighter.

Jeff Bezos founded Amazon on July 5, 1994, in his garage in Bellevue, Washington. Starting Monday, 27 years after the company was founded, Bezos will step down from Amazon’s board of directors and hand over the CEO title to his once-out savior, Cloud Computing Chief Andy Jassy. Bezos’s departure from the top position comes at a time of great success for the company as Amazon surpassed the $100 billion mark for the first time in quarterly sales in February.

Former Amazon employees pointed out in interviews that Jassy’s soft personality in Silicon Valley circles cannot really be identified from the outside, and anyone who works for Amazon benefits from the company staring at its critics. Bezo’s push became clear as he veered away from former President Donald Trump’s direct goals. Jassy’s challenge comes amid growing calls for stricter regulation of the tech giants. US companies have come to Amazon’s throne to capitalise on their own reach. Jassy is deeply rooted in Amazon’s corporate tradition and has helped develop core leadership principles for information workers.
