Starting with the iPhone 12, Apple began the practise of eliminating charging bricks from their devices, and Samsung was the first business to follow suit. With the Galaxy S21 series, it stopped supplying charging bricks and instead included a USB-C cable.

While Apple indicated at the time that the decision was made to reduce the amount of e-waste being generated, it was expected that everyone had a charger laying around from their prior phone.

However, consumer groups in Brazil disagreed. The Brazilian Ministry of Justice has announced that over 900 Procon departments, or consumer rights organisations, are planning to sue Samsung and Apple soon.

The departments have stated that they would present their arguments as well as suggest remedies before deciding whether or not penalties will be imposed.

This comes just weeks after a Brazilian court forced Apple to pay a $1,081 punishment per customer after a Brazilian court determined that not included a charger in the package was “abusive and unlawful.”

According to recent sources, Apple saved over $6.5 billion by not included a charger and headset with iPhones, as well as additional money from selling the charger and other accessories at market pricing.
