China turns to India for rice for the first time in decades

India is the world’s greatest exporter of rice and China is the greatest importer of rice. Beijing imports around 4 million tons of rice every year except has dodged buys from India.

“Unexpectedly, China has made rice buys. They may expand purchasing one year from now in the wake of seeing the nature of Indian yield,” said B.V. Krishna Rao, leader of the Rice Exporters Association.

Indian merchants have contracted to trade 100,000 tons of broken rice for December – February shipments at around $300 per ton, industry authorities said.

China’s customary providers, for example, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Pakistan, have restricted excess supplies for sending out and were cited in any event $30 per ton more contrasted and Indian costs, as per Indian rice exchange authorities.
