Facebook launches new initiative to protect children online

The initiative is called ‘Report it, don’t share it’. It is being done in collaboration with civil society organisations and NGOs like Aarambh India Initiative, Cyber Peace Foundation and Arpan.

Mysuru: Facebook, in its new initiative called ‘Report it, don’t share it’ aims to protect children by encouraging users to report child abuse content instead of sharing it on its platform.

This initiative is being done in collaboration with civil society organisations and NGOs like Aarambh India Initiative, Cyber Peace Foundation and Arpan. This initiative was introduced by Facebook by sharing an animated video that talks about the consequences of sharing child abuse content on its platform and what children might have to go through if subjected to such abuse.

The Head of Policy Reforms and Outreach, Facebook India, in a statement, according to reports said that Facebook and Instagram want to foster a safe environment for its users and while high-end technology is employed to identify and remove such content before people see it, they also want to spread awareness among people about the consequences of sharing such content on social media.

Facebook does have a redressal option where people can report such content if found by calling 1098 or by reporting it at Childline India Foundation.

This initiative has been launched after it was found that many sexual and abusive content that involve children is circulated to cause harm. They also have the option to choose ‘involve a child’ to help reporting such content quickly to avoid major consequences.
