Kakao co-CEO resigns after mass outage locked Fifty three million users out

A top govt at Kakao Corp., the operator of South Korea’s top mobile messenger KakaoTalk, will step down. His resignation comes after a fireplace at a data center ended in a mass outage over the weekend and disrupted products and providers for its messenger’s 53 million users worldwide.

Co-CEO Namkoong Whon apologized following the outage and said he would resign.

“I feel the heavy burden of responsibility over this incident and may well possibly step down from my situation as CEO and lead the emergency distress job drive overseeing the aftermath of the incident,” Namkoong said at a press conference on the company’s pickle of commercial in the outskirts of Seoul on Wednesday.

“We are able to enact our ultimate to restore our users’ faith in Kakao and build obvious incidents treasure these by no formulation happen again,” he said, in accordance with a CNBC translation.

Hong Eun-taek, who led the company alongside Namkoong as co-CEO, will stay the sole head of the company, in accordance with a company filing.

“We sincerely narrate sorry to all of us which beget suffered from the disruptions at some level of the outage,” Hong said as he bowed alongside Namkoong.

Shares of the company traded 4% elevated in Korea’s morning session sooner than the press conference.
