Look back to 2020: A year of great loss?

Finally, 2020 is coming to an end. A year that is filled with uncertainties, you can say a nightmare for the majority of the people across the globe. Starting with the deadly disease which was ever known to mankind to forest fires and locust swarms have made this year frustrating and devastating. In this year, natural disasters have brought catastrophic results for millions around the world. They not only dragged thousands to death but made a loss of billions of dollars.

However, the sudden death of some of the iconic figures that nobody can imagine brought darkness to the human world. A year that everyone wants to forget and bid quick goodbye so that everyone can welcome 2021 with hope and happiness.

Let’s take a quick look on the whole of 2020 standing on the edge of this year-

The Australian Bushfire

While the whole world was celebrating the 2020 New Year, Australia was facing one of the biggest natural disasters bush fire. This fire almost destroyed 18.6 million hectares and damaged almost 5,900 buildings, and killed 34 people also 400 people died due to smoke inhalation.  

Devastating flood in Indonesia

On 1st January devastating flood in Indonesia destroyed the capital city Jakarta and some of its neighboring areas. Almost 4lakhs people fled from their homes and the flood brought heavy rains which caused huge damage and many people submerged in the waters which were 5ft depth. 66 people lost their lives in this disaster.

Hurricanes in the United States

In this year, the United States was hit by a devastating natural disaster that led to the highest economic costs. Other than the pandemic, a record-breaking hurricane made the loss of thousands of dollars. The wildfire caused due to the hurricane added up to almost a loss of $60bn.

Volcano Eruption in the Philippines

Taal Volcano is the second most active volcano in the Philippines and it started rumbling on 12th Jan in Luzon and the ash dust of this eruption is found 100km away. This volcano last erupted 43years back. Still, the Philippines is reeling from the volcanic eruption with several countries sending in domestic aid.

Earthquakes in Turkey, the Caribbean, China, Iran, Russia, Philippines & India

In 2020, there have been many earthquakes. Almost 45 earthquakes were characterized over 6 magnitudes. In Jamaica and Russia, the worst hit of the earthquake was 7 magnitude. In Turkey, this natural disaster took the life of 41 people.

Attack of Locust Swarms in east Africa and parts of India & Asia

Desert Locusts have swarmed 5 states in India namely Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. It was first detected in east Africa and then in Pakistan. These deadly locusts have highly affected human life and damaged crops.

Cyclone Amphan in India and Bangladesh

Cyclone Amphan has created a huge impact on West Bengal and Odisha in May 2020. The metrological department has remarked it as the “extremely severe cyclonic storm”. Almost 12 people died in Bengal and power supply and phone networks were affected.

Some other major natural disasters that took place are European windstorms, floods in India, China, and Japan, and Antarctica snow turns green.

COVID-19

With the symptoms of cold, fever, cough, and breathing troubles coronavirus has affected different people in different ways. This disease has limited the life of the people within the home and dragged the world economy into a crisis. In this pandemic, thousands of people lost their jobs and lives.

Outbreak of Ebola in Congo

Ebola is not a contagious or a common virus. This virus spreads through the direct contamination of sweat, blood, tears, saliva, feces, mucus, urine, breast milk, and semen of the people who are infected by this virus. It can be also caused by touching the things that are contaminated with this infectious fluid. It took away the lives of many.

Some other diseases that occurred are Dengu, malaria, and cholera.

2020 has been a year of great loss, as we have lost some of the iconic figures whose contribution is immense.

Indian Film icons

Indian film industry lost several gems in 2020. From actors Sushant Singh Rajput, Irrfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor, Soumitra Chatterjee, and Jagdeep, to filmmaker Nishikant Kamat, singer SP Balasubrahmanyam and choreographer Saroj Khan, the death of several celebrities left a void in the Indian entertainment industry.

Hollywood 

2020 Hollywood have said farewell to Dawn Wells, Charley Pride, Dame Barbara Windsor, Natalie Desselle—Reid, David Prowse, Alex Trebek, Doug Supernaw, King Von, Nikki McKibbin, Elsa Raven, Sean Connery, Rhonda Fleming, Anthony Chisholm, Eddie van Halen, and many others

Sports Personalities

Multiple legendary sporting personalities passed away in 2020. Among them, the sudden death of Diego Maradona and Kobe Bryant has brought a tragic end to 2020.
