RBI allows prepaid mobile recharges through BBPS

The RBI on June 14 allowed prepaid mobile recharges through BBPS platform.

Mysuru: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on June 14 allowed prepaid mobile recharges through the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS).

The BBPS is a platform for recurring bill payments like Direct to Home (DTH), electricity bill, gas, water etc. It is operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). It was started in 2014. The RBI, according to reports, has stated that to facilitate mobile prepaid customers with more options to recharge, the central bank has decided to permit prepaid recharges through the BBPS platform.

This move is expected to be implemented before August 31, 2021.

In 2019, the scope of the BBPS platform was expanded to include all billing categories that are recurring except mobile recharge payments. This, of course, in on a voluntary basis. Now, almost two years later, the RBI has issued another circular to include mobile recharge payments too on its platform, thus expanding its scope more.

This system of paying bills through the platform provides customer redressal grievance mechanism and options for digital payments. According to a report, in May alone, 213.59 million bill payment transactions were carried out through the BBPS platform.
