Salute to Indian farmers for their immense contribution

On 23rd December, every year India celebrates National Farmer Day or Kisan Diwas. This auspicious day is celebrated in the memory of Choudhary Charan Singh, the fifth Prime Minister of India.

Farmers are an indispensable part of society. Only because of their hard works people neither starve nor dies out of hunger. They are the backbone of the nation’s economy. Every year on the birthday of Choudhary Charan Singh, Kisan Diwas is celebrated to acknowledge the contribution of farmers. In 2001, the government of India officially declared this day as Kisan Diwas.

Charan Singh’s contribution to several land reforms in the country is especially an unforgettable part. He worked hard for years to establish the importance of farmers in India. Through books and pamphlets, he tried to highlight the importance of the farmers. “Abolition of Zamindari”, “Peasant Proprietorship or Land to the Workers”, Co-operative Farming X-rayed’ and “Prevention of Division of Holdings Below a Certain Minimum” are some of his remarkable books.

Famous Slogan followed by Chaudhary Charan Singh – “JAI JAWAN JAI KISAN

In 2020, Kisan Diwas has gained its new meaning in terms of three fresh agriculture-related laws established by the Centre. In response to this law, a huge protest broke out in the country. This law permits the farmers to sell their produce outside mandis regulated by APMCs (Agricultural Produce Market Committees). Protesters fear that the law might lead to the dismantling of the MSP and the creation of large monopolies.
