Serum Institute director predicts that India may vaccinate 300 million people by summer

On Thursday, the executive director of the Serum Institute of India mentioned that India is on the verge of completing the Covid-19 inoculation effort for frontline workers and people above 60 in the next three or four months.

As per the report it is found, in January the South Asian country has already rolled out the world’s largest vaccination campaign for almost a 300million people among the 1.3billion population. According to the last update on Wednesday evening, more than 36 million people have been vaccinated per data from the Indian Health ministry.

In an interview, Suresh Jadhav told the news channel, “The number of doses which are required in India are huge.” He also mentioned that the vaccination program is a gigantic task that is impossible to complete within a short time frame.

Suresh Jadhav added, “At a speed of about 50 (million) to 60 million doses per month, this program will continue and they will cover this population of 300 million in another about three to four months time.”

Well, Mr. Jadhav has also participated in the Asian Development Bank’s Southeast Asia Development Symposium 2021.

Moreover, Serum Institute has emerged as a crucial player in the Covid vaccination effort both in India and globally. Moreover, it is the world’s largest vaccine maker by huge volume. Further, it helps in manufacturing the COVID-19 vaccine established by British-Swedish pharma giant AstraZeneca and Oxford University that is known locally as Covishield.

Millions of doses are supplied to the Indian government as well as to Covax. World Health Organization took a global vaccination initiative and also assures equitable distribution of shots in less wealthy countries.

In the last month, Serum Institute CEO Adar Poonawalla asked the foreign government to remain patient by responding to the growing demand for its covid vaccine. He also mentioned that without explaining the further needs, the company must take the required initiative to meet the domestic demand first.

Further, Jadhav has also mentioned that Serum Institute is capable of meeting the recent orders which have been placed by the Indian government. Additionally, the company mentioned that they have already supplied almost a 59million doses to Covax. Notably, he has added that Serum Institute is planning to amplify its capability by end of April and in early May. Also, it aims to enhance the production by another 40million to 50million doses.

Right now Serum Institute has reported the production of more than 70 million doses per month. In the last week, the United States, Japan, and Australia had pledged to help Indian companies in expanding their corona vaccine production capabilities. However, it provides more doses to the global supply pool.

Currently, India has now locally developed vaccine from Bharat Biotech which was specifically developed vaccine from Bharat Biotech in association with the state-run Indian Council of Medical Research.
