According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor report and Refrens, a Bangalore-based company operating platform for freelancers and agencies around the world, the development of solopreneurship and freelancing is on the rise globally and in India. According to the report, AI technologies such as ChatGPT and Midjourney are already being utilised by these individuals and are having a good influence on productivity. The common perception of an entrepreneur is someone who is establishing a significant business with a growing team. There are, however, various types of business models. A solopreneur or a freelancer is a single person with an in-demand ability. And that is a growing trend.

According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor report, over 19 of the 32 nations they studied between 2019 and 2022 showed an increase in this type of solopreneurship. And over the following five years, these people had no plans to increase their payroll.

Individual producers, freelancers, and solopreneurs are becoming more and more prevalent, even in India. One difficulty some of these business owners encounter when they grow their enterprises and develop their expertise is the requirement to be continually accessible even though they lack a backup plan or additional resources.

Given the exponential growth of generative tools, the question is whether there are any particular areas where solopreneurs and independent contractors can receive assistance in order to save time.

What are the thoughts of solopreneurs and freelancers on this?

To examine the trend in India, Refrens, a Bangalore-based business operating platform for freelancers and agencies worldwide, polled 1,600+ freelancers. The major finding was that generative AI tools like ChatGPT were already being used by this group; 47% of those polled indicated they use these tools on a regular basis, and more than half stated it would have a good impact and make them more productive.

People like full stack designers, marketing consultants, brand strategists, content creators (influencers), interior designers, and software developers were among the early adopters of generative AI tools.

A recent freelance software developer named Brijesh Agarwal stated in the paper that “AI is making a 1x engineer a 10x engineer, and a 10x engineer a 100x one.”

But there are growing worries. Refrens’ study found that 17% of respondents were concerned that AI would have a detrimental impact on their ability to do their jobs. In the study, some people who work as blog writers, proofreaders, SEO writers, copywriters, translators, graphic designers, virtual assistants, data analysts, product photographers, and paralegals voiced these worries.

In what areas could you be able to assist?

These resources can help freelance writers who work on their own save time doing preliminary research on particular subjects and even obtain first-pass draughts of material for websites and SEO. They still need to make sure the edits and customization are done correctly.

In terms of design, solopreneurs wishing to create posters and logos are considering programmes like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion.

Solopreneurs and freelancers must make sure they select the appropriate tools, though, as more of these are quickly becoming available. This will help them save time rather than wasting their already limited time.

How do customers view this?

The underlying lesson is that while freelancers and one-person businesses can gain somewhat from these tools, it’s equally critical to understand how their clients feel about this change and how receptive they are to it.

Only 7% of those surveyed said their clients did not want them to use these AI tools. Concerning copyright matters, they were concerned. However, 27% of respondents said they were okay with it, and another 22% said they were unconcerned about the matter. However, a significant portion, or 44%, claimed that they had not specifically brought up this issue with their clients.

Naman Sarawagi, CEO of Refrens, stated in the report that “AI is reducing the time between idea to execution with every new tool and every new update.” The third trend  is to look for is whether it can facilitate a larger shift towards solopreneurship and freelancing as this segment adopts generative AI tools more appropriately.
