Zuckerberg pushed to cancel plans to lance Instagram for kids

On Thursday, a backing group proclaimed on social media giant “Facebook” Inc CEO (chief executive officer) Mark Zuckerberg not to create a new version of photo-sharing application- Instagram for children under 13, as it would put them at risk, and misinformation.

One letter was sent to Zuckerberg from the CCFC (Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood) in which it is criticized for amplifying misinformation all over the world across its platforms, while also exposing children to inappropriate material.

When Reuters commented on a request, Facebook did not immediately respond to it. The CCFC claimed that Instagram exploits youngsters’ fear of missing out and urges to be known, a well-grown account with 1000s of followers and more. All this leads to negative thought processes, distracts them from reality, and so on. They constantly check their devices seeking approval and posting pictures, adding that the platform’s continuous focus on appearance and self-presentation would be a challenge to adolescents’ privacy and wellbeing.

The letter also said- “While collecting valuable family data and cultivating a new generation of Instagram users may be good for Facebook’s bottom line, it will likely increase the use of Instagram by young children who are particularly vulnerable to the platform’s manipulative and exploitative features”.

CCFC is a non-profit organization that is US-based. It is a national coalition of healthcare professionals, educators, advocacy groups, individuals, parents, who work together for children. It is the only organization devoted to limiting the impact of commercial culture on children. It is detected by ending the marketing to children, inappropriate information, and excessive usage of electronic devices, or wrong exposure to digital platforms.
