Every year, on 4th April International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, is celebrated. This day was approved by the General Assembly on 8th December 2005. The prime aim of this day is to seek assistance for mine action work, raised awareness regarding the landmines, and advance towards their education. However, the mining community is globally led by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS). This started rolling out activities a week in advance.
Through the assistance of the UN and other relevant organizations, the service calls will continue its effort to substitute the development of national mine-action capacities in those places where the mines and explosive tails bring the end of the war that adds up to an uninviting threat to the lives of the civilian population.
Notably, the work of the UNMAS in the last 20 years has been motivated by the need of affected individuals and adapted to the threat of hazards handled by the humanitarians.
Notably, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres provided a message on the behalf of the organization, “Today, on the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, we reflect on how far we have come in raising awareness of the dangers posed by landmines and recommit to our target of a mine-free world.”
In the year 2021, the United Nations has pledged to highlight how “Perseverance, Partnership, and Progress” have now carried out the mining sector through the challenging year due to pandemics. However, the UN will progress its effort to mitigate the threats of improvised explosive instruments. Moreover, the landmines and explosive weapons which will be will be cleared, existing schemes and capacity growth of national partners will persist.
Well, the mine action community will be conserved to adapt and assure progress towards a society that is free from the threat of landmines and unexploded ordnance. Through ceremonies and speech, the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action will be celebrated on 4th April 2021 by the UN officials and leaders.
